After finally filling in all the numbers and checking the boxes in TurboTax, I wanted to be sure everything looked right before sending - and I'm glad I did. My husband helped me double-check the numbers and we found an error. The number I entered for real estate taxes paid was correct in the system. When we checked over the hard copy, this number was incorrect on the federal return and on one state return. It was correct on the other state return. How did this happen? We have no idea, but I went back and deleted that line item, then re-entered the correct amount (again!). After that, all the numbers were the same on each return. With much trepidation, I hit the send button. Now, we wait for final processing.
What are the lessons learned from my "do-it-yourself" experience? Here are some thoughts for next year:
- Have all the paperwork together first.
- Send the kids out of town for a week. Or more.
- Check, double-check and check the numbers again.
- Don't procrastinate.
- Have the IRS website handy.
- Did I mention to double-check all the returns before sending?
So, how was your tax filing experience? Let me know how it went for you.
